CAIRO: The High Elections Commission (HEC) will adjudicate on 16 challenges to the results of the first phase of the parliamentary elections runoffs Thursday, HEC spokesperson Omar Marwan said.
The challenges came from six different governorates; the runoffs were held in 14 governorates Tuesday-Wednesday. The HEC is scheduled to announce the runoff results Friday.
The second phase of the elections will be held Nov. 22-23 inside Egypt in 13 governorates including Cairo.
The voter turnout of the runoff is expected to be rather low, as the turnout in the first round Oct. 18-19 reached 30 percent according to a poll carried out by the Egyptian Center for Public Opinion Research, but some media outlets and observers reported that the turnout was as low as 15 percent.
The results of Egypt’s 2015 parliamentary elections will be announced Dec. 3.
The voter turnout in the 2011/2012 parliamentary elections amounted to around 55 percent.
