CAIRO: The Zaqaziq Criminal Court sentenced Thursday militant Adel Habara to death for the murder of a policeman in Egypt’s Delta governorate of Sharqia, Youm7 reported.
The court referred the case to Grand Mufti Shawki Allam for a religious opinion; a procedural step taken in Egypt ahead of the official issue of a death sentence.
The court has set Dec. 6 to make its final decision on the case. However, the Mufti’s opinion is not binding.
Thursday’s death sentence is the third Habara received since he was arrested in 2012.
In December 2014, Habara and six other defendants were sentenced to death in absentia, 22 others were sentenced to life and two received 15 years in prison; all defendants appealed the verdicts. On June 13, The Court of Cassation accepted their challenges.
According to the investigations, the convicts face charges of killing security personnel and spying for an al-Qaeda affiliate in Iraq.
