CAIRO: The Egyptian Armed Forces destroyed 31 tunnel openings on the Gaza and northern Sinai borders in October, military spokesperson Mohamed Samir stated Sunday.
The statement concludes the security efforts of the armed forces across the country during the month of October.
“Egypt’s border guards thwarted illegal migration attempts of 3,576 people of different nationalities,” said the statement.
Hundreds of refugees from different parts of the Middle East have been arrested in Egypt’s northern borders while crossing the Mediterranean to reach Europe in the past months.
“A total of 206 arms including machine guns, rocket-propelled grenades and cannonballs were seized,” according to the statement.
In January, President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi issued a decree to create a “unified military command” for the east of the Suez Canal to combat terrorism following a series of militant attacks killed at least 34 people in North Sinai.
The armed forces have seized 6,550 kilograms of marijuana and 260 kilograms of hashish, and more than 1 million Tamil and Tramadol tablets, according to the statement.
