CAIRO: Tons of food items were sent to villages affected by floods in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria, according to a Monday statement by the Ministry of Supply.
Amounts of bread were also distributed to residents in areas that witnessed blackouts at bakeries due to the bad weather.
Alexandria has been one of the most affected cities in a wave of heavy showers that swept across the country over the past two weeks. Rainwater accumulated in main streets in the city, covering trees and cars and causing traffic congestions.
President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi paid a visit Sunday to Alexandria, and ordered that the efficiency of a drainage network be raised within 10 days under military supervision, according to a presidency statement.
The study at some 400 schools in Beheira governorate has been halted after water swept into schools and flooded classrooms. The government announced 24 deaths due to weather- related accidents, at least nine of them from electric shocks, and others were reportedly died while sleeping after rainwater flooded their homes.
