CAIRO: A Paraguayan passenger was busted at Cairo International Airport over hiding some 1.5 kg of cocaine in his luggage after arriving from Ethiopia, Youm7 reported Monday.
A police report was filed about the incident and the passenger was referred to prosecution.
The Customs Department’s move to inspect the passenger’s bags was supported by prior information about the smuggling attempt reported by the anti-drug bureau at the airport.
Customs officials at the Cairo Airport have recently stopped several attempts to smuggle drugs, money, and artifacts.
On Saturday, officials foiled and attempt by two German passengers to smuggle controlled medicines worth 500,000 EGP ($62,296) to Amsterdam.
In Nov. 1, airport authorities briefly busted a Chadian diplomat for possession of hashish.
In Nov. 4, Borg el-Arab International Airport in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria stopped an attempt by an Egyptian passenger, arriving from Turkey, to smuggle amounts of cancer drugs worth 70,000 EGP.
