CAIRO: The Ministry of Interior released a video Monday detailing its operation that lead to the killing of Ashraf al-Gharbali, a leader of the “Sinai Province” group, previously known as Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis.

Gharbali had returned to al-Marg in the greater Cairo area with the intent to plan a “huge terrorist operation,” the ministry states in their video. Security forces tracked him based on tips, and once they identified his car they approached, he returned fire, and in the resulting shootout he was killed.

Gharably is considered a mastermind of a number of operations, including a car bomb outside the Italian consulate in Cairo, the killing U.S. oil worker William Henderson who was abducted in August 2014 and Croatian Tomislav Salopek who was abducted from Cairo and reportedly beheaded in August 2015.
