CAIRO: The Egypt national football team were handed a surprise 1-0 defeat at the hands of Chad in the first of two legs of the World Cup qualifiers preliminary round held in N’Djamena Saturday.
A diving header, by Chadian striker Ezechiel N’Douassel in the second half of the match, handed Chad their first ever win over Egypt. The match was held at the Stade Idriss Mahamat Ouya.
The performance of the Egyptian team was criticized by social media users, meanwhile striker Mohamed Salah and defender Mohamed Abdel-Shafy missed out due to injuries picked up shortly before the match.
The second leg of Egypt-Chad match is scheduled for Nov. 17 at Alexandria’s Borg al-Arab Stadium with 20,000 fans allowed to attend, the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) executive director Tharwat Sweilam announced earlier this month.
According to FIFA World cup regulations, winners of the second-round games will be divided into five groups of four teams each with the leaders of each group automatically qualifying for the 2018 World Cup scheduled to be held in Russia.
