CAIRO: Egyptian naval forces arrested Tuesday seven alleged drug smugglers near Damietta city, according to a statement from the Egyptian Ministry of Defense.

The forces managed to foil attempt of smuggling 30 barrels of hashish (totalling 1,250 kg), and 709,000 Captagon tablets, the statement added, noting that all arrested smugglers were escorted to the Port Said Naval Base for interrogation.

On Oct. 2, a police conscript was killed after being shot by alleged smugglers in North Sinai, according to a statement from the Ministry of Interior.

Two suspected smugglers were killed in February at the Egyptian-Israeli borders in an exchange of fire that included forces from the two countries and the smugglers early Tuesday, Haaretz reported.
