CAIRO: An oil spill was discovered floating on the Nile River in Upper Egypt’s governorate of Qena Thursday evening causing a water refinery to suspend its operation, Youm7 reported.
The Holding Company for Water and Waste Water had been put on alert to contain the spill by all possible means and said it had cut off water to the region as a precautionary measure.
The source of the spill remains unknown. The prosecution in Qena is investigating the oil spill to determine the cause and source of the accident.
The Qena Governorate has announced it had prepared large quantities of sponge and chaff to contain the oil spill.
Environment Minister Khaled Fahmy instructed ministry officials in the governorate to follow up on the spill.
