CAIRO: Egypt’s Red Sea was ranked the best diving destination, for the second time in a row, in the annual readers’ poll carried out by the British Sport Diver magazine, Youm7 reported.
The news was announced during the Birmingham City Dive Show in which more than 200 dive centers and tour operators specializing in diving and diving equipment traders have participated, Chairman of the Egyptian Tourism Promotion Authority Mahmoud Sami was quoted by Youm7 Thursday.
Egypt’s Red Sea diving destinations were followed by those of Philippines and the Maldives islands, according to Sami.
“It is a positive sign that might cause the British government to resume its flights to and from Egypt’s Red Sea destinations,” he added.
The UK, Russia and other countries have suspended flights over security concerns after the Russian plane that crashed over Sinai at the end of October.
However, the UK government said in a statement Friday it is working “actively and urgently” to resume flights to the Egyptian resort of Sharm al-Sheikh, according to Reuters.
Egypt’s Red Sea resort cities, particularly Sharm al-Sheikh, are major destination for British tourists with a number of leading British charter airlines, including Thomson and Thomas Cook.
