CAIRO: The draw for the 3rd round of African Zone qualifiers for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia will take place at the Confederation of African Football (CAF) headquarters in Cairo on June, 24, 2016, FIFA announced in a statement Friday.
“This draw will involve 20 teams drawn into five four-team groups, with sides playing each other home and away on a round-robin basis. All five group winners will qualify automatically for Russia 2018,” said the statement.
The qualifier matches will start Oct. 3, 2016 and finish by Nov. 6, 2017, according to the statement.
The 20 teams will be seeded into four pots based on their FIFA rankings. Egypt now holds the 11th position in Africa, which puts them in pot three.
However, rankings can change when Egypt play matches before the draw in June. Egypt has qualified for the third and final round of World Cup qualifications after beating Chad 4-1 on aggregate.
The African teams qualified for the final round Ivory Coast, Algeria, Ghana, Cape Verde, Tunisia, Senegal, Congo, Guinea, Egypt, Cameroon, DR Congo, Nigeria, Mali, Uganda, South Africa, Zambia, Morocco, Gabon, Burkina Faso and Libya.
