CAIRO: Egypt’s total amount of household waste that has been disposed in 2014 reached 12.1 million tons (44,000 million cubic meters,) the Central Agency for Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) stated Sunday.
Some 5.9 million Cubic meters of the waste were disposed by municipalities across the country while 4.4 million were disposed by solid waste management companies, said the report. However, the report did not mention the total amount of household waste generated in Egypt in 2014 or how the rest of the waste was disposed.
Cairo topped the list of Egypt’s 27 governorates generating household waste disposed in 2014 with 2.7 million tons. Giza governorate came second with 1.7 million tons while the Mediterranean city of Alexandria came in the third place with 1.7 million tons of household waste disposed in 2014.
The report did not mention the amounts of other types of solid waste generated and disposed in Egypt in the same year.
According to a report on the solid waste management in Egypt published by SWEEP-Net, the country has generated 89.03 million tons of solid waste in 2012 out of which 21 million tons were of municipal solid waste and 30 million tons of agricultural waste.
