Pope Tawadros II heads for Jerusalem

CAIRO: Pope Tawadros II of Alexandria and Patriarch of St. Mark See will travel to Jerusalem Saturday to participate in the funeral service of Anba Abraham, Coptic Orthodox Metropolitan Archbishop of Jerusalem and the Near East, Youm7 reported.

Pope Tawadros II will preside over a delegation of Coptic bishops. The funeral will be held Saturday.

Anba Abraham, who passed away late Wednesday, was born in 1943 in Upper Egypt’s governorate of Sohag, according to Jerusalem Coptic Orthodox Church.

He graduated from the Egyptian Agricultural College in 1964 and later received his master’s and doctoral degrees in Medicinal and Aromatic Plants. In 1967, he obtained a B.A. and in 1971 an M.A. Degree in Theology from Cairo Theological Institutes before he became a Professor in 1983 in the National Research Center in Egypt.

In November 1991, he was consecrated Metropolitan of Jerusalem and the Near East by Pope Shenouda III.
