Every university in Egypt has elected its head of student union this year, in the elections which began in Nov.2. A total number of 22,996 students were the finalists after some 1,537 were excluded from the race for not meeting candidacy conditions, with political affiliations topping the reasons.

The Higher Education Ministry announced it banned the candidacy of pro-Muslim Brotherhood students from running the elections.

The university students’ elections were cancelled in 2013 and 2014 due to the escalating on-campus protests and deadly clashes between security forces and university students across Egypt in which dozens of students were killed and hundreds were jailed.
