CAIRO: A large number of fish were found floating in water in Alexandria’s district of Qabary causing panic to fishermen and residents who mainly depend on fishing as their source of life, Youm7 reported Saturday.
The reason for the mass fish death is because the water was mixed with sewage coming from the Citadel of Qaitbay, member of the popular campaign to develop Qabary area Abdel Aziz el-Shenawy told Youm7.
The area is famous for the tilapia fish, which is the main source of food for the poor given its low price, said Shenawy, adding that the situation is “catastrophic” and needs officials’ rapid intervention.
At least two similar incidents of mass fish deaths took place in Beheira and the Rosetta branch of the Nile.
One of them was in June, where officials reported that ammonia poisoning and lack of oxygen in the water was the cause behind fish suffocation due to hot weather.
