CAIRO: Four officers were ordered detained for four days Friday pending investigations into the death of a man in Luxor, Upper Egypt, Youm7 reported.
Large protests took to streets in Luxor last week after Talaat Shabib, 47, was arrested at a café in allegedly possession of drugs, but was reported dead less than one hour after being taken to a police station. The authorities did not apply the 2013 protest law on the demonstrators, who had clashed with the police.
The protest slammed “police brutality and torture” at police stations before detainees are brought before a prosecutor.
While the Interior Ministry says such incidents “are not systematic,” it vowed to bring perpetrators of such cases to justice.
In a visit to the Police Academy Thursday, President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi said the officers should not be all painted with a broad brush due to the violations of some.
