Education Ministry cracks down on private tutoring
Dozens of high school students protested Thursday outside the Press Syndicate - YOUM7

CAIRO: Personnel from the Education Ministry have been granted the power of judicial arrest to close down private tutoring centers, an official source at the Ministry told Youm7 Friday.

Per the approval of the Justice Ministry the staff of the legal affairs at all branches of the ministry in all governorates will be able to crackdown on such centers, deemed as damaging to the educational system.

A total of 1,630 centers have been detected in Egypt by the ministry, some of which have been shut down, the source said.

High school students almost entirely depend on private tutoring ; hence a high absenteeism rate at their schools. Many primary and preparatory students also turn to private classes to enhance their skills or because their schools do not provide them with adequate education.

Other than private centers, where one group can reach up to 40 students, many teachers go to students’ homes to deliver lessons.
