CAIRO:The Egyptian Under-23 national team failed to qualify for the semi finals of the African Cup of Nations qualifier for the 2016 Rio De Janeiro Olympic games as they lost 1-0 to Mali Saturday.

The Pharaohs needed a win to have a chance at advancing and secure one of three seats allocated to Africa but were unlucky after defender Mohamed Hamdy scored an own goal from a corner kick on 19 minutes.

Egypt’s loss helped other two teams in Group B; Nigeria and Algeria to qualify for the semi finals after a 0-0 draw Saturday at the Stade Léopold Sédar Senghor, Dakar.

Only the top two teams of each group qualify to the competition’s semi final, while the top three teams of the tournament will have their spots secured in the 2016 Rio De Janeiro Olympics.

Group A includes hosts Senegal, South Africa, Zambia, and Tunisia.

Egypt reached the quarter finals at the 2012 London Games after qualifying for the Olympics for the first time since 1992.
