CAIRO: Egyptian Hedaya Malak has won the 57 kg gold medal Sunday in the 2015 World Taekwondo Grand Prix championship currently held in Mexico City, Mexico.

Malak, 22, has secured herself a seat at the 2016 Olympics in Rio De Janeiro after defeating Spain’s Eva Calvo Gomez in the final of the championship, while she defeated UK’s Olympic 57-Kg gold medalist Jade Jones, who won the bronze medal, in the semi-final.

Malak, who is currently ranked 4th in the Olympic ranking, is expected to move to the third place after Sunday’s win.

At the London 2012 Olympics, Malak competed in the Taekwondo women’s 57 kg and qualified for the quarterfinals after defeating New Zealand’s Robin Cheong in the round of 16. However,  she was defeated at the quarterfinals by French Marlène Harnois.
