CAIRO: Four police personnel were referred Thursday to a criminal court over charges of torturing a prisoner to death inside a police station in Luxor, Youm7 reported.
The four police personnel were detained on Dec. 4 pending investigations; Large protests took to streets in Luxor last week after Talaat Shabib, 47, was arrested at a café in allegedly possession of drugs, but was reported dead less than one hour after being taken to a police station.
The authorities did not apply the 2013 protest law on the demonstrators, who had clashed with the police.
While the Interior Ministry says such incidents “are not systematic,” it vowed to bring perpetrators of such cases to justice.
In a visit to the Police Academy Thursday, President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi said the officers should not be all painted with a broad brush due to the violations of some.
