CAIRO: The Damanhour criminal court sentenced Thursday a police officer to five years in jail for the fatal torture of inmate in police custody, Youm7 reported.
The court also acquitted other two police informants in the same case in which Sayed al Kassabry was killed while detained at Rashid police station in May. However, the ruling can still be appealed.
The ruling comes days after Attorney General of Luxor prosecutions Ahmed Abdel Rahman ordered the detention of five low-ranking officers for four days pending investigation on charges of torturing another inmate to death at the Luxor police station.
While the Interior Ministry says such incidents “are not systematic,” it vowed to bring perpetrators of such cases to justice.
