CAIRO: Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry headed to Rome Saturday to take part in an international meeting to discuss the Libyan crisis due to open on Sunday, Youm7 reported.

The meeting, which was called for by Italy and the US, will be held at ministerial level where representatives of the Libyan fractions along with a number of international and regional parties and the UN envoy to Libya Martin Kobler will be present, Youm7 quoted foreign ministry Ahmed Abu Zeid Saturday.

The oil-rich state has been witnessing a rising militancy and an increasing use of weapons since the overthrow of President Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.

The meeting aims to encourage the conflicting Libyan fractions to reach a political solution, confront terrorism and form a national unity government, according to Abu Zeid.
