CAIRO: Egypt’s Dar Al-Ifta is expected to announce Tuesday the establishment of the General Secretariat for Fatwa Offices Worldwide, Youm7 reported.
“The aim is to exchange practical, scholarly and organizational experiences among the member fatwa houses and to discuss contemporary issues,” Grand Mufti Shawky Allam wrote in a statement released on the Dar Al Ifta’s Facebook page.
The conference, scheduled to be held at Dar Al-Ifta headquarters, will bring over 50 muftis from across the Islamic world, said the statement.
The move comes to confront the “chaos of fatwas,” which have been seen as a major source of religious extremism and terrorism, and to consolidate the power to issue fatwas into its own hands, Dar Al-Ifta, Egypt’s official religious institution tasked with drafting edicts, it stated.
The general secretariat will hold an annual conference to discuss the establishment of a fatwa training academy and dispatch delegations abroad to correct “false notions” about Islam, according to Allam.
