CAIRO: A total of 10 million EGP ($1.2 million) have been collected from donation boxes of mosques across Egypt in 2015, Endowment Minister Mokhtar Gomaa told Youm7 Friday.
The amount registers a 200-percent increase from last year, according to Gomaa.
The ministry has applied strict regulations over donations at mosques since the 2013 ouster of President Mohamed Morsi, as charity funds that are not in the ministry’s records were rampant.
The mosques are all under the jurisdiction of the Endowment Ministry, but the private funds that were informally set at the mosques with allegations that the cash was used to finance the Muslim Brotherhood.
All private funds were removed, and only the ministry’s funds remained, registering a significant increase in donations. The donations are to be used for charity purposes.
