CAIRO: A new housing initiative will reduce the pressures on slum areas within two to three years, announced Cairo governor Jalal Said on the “Life Today” program Sunday.

He added that 15,600 units were being developed, as well as 100 minibuses to provide reliable transportation to residential areas.

Some 3,000 tuk-tuks (3-wheel motorcycle taxis) have been fined for operating in the capital, Said said, adding that he would continue pursuing action against them. Tuk-tuks have no licenses, and although they have become ubiquitous in many poorer areas, they are technically illegal.
