16 Egyptian men arrested in Tunisia over illegal fishing

CAIRO:Tunisian military forces seized Monday evening a fishery boat with 16 Egyptian nations on board off the coast of Zarzis city, the Tunisian Ministry of Defense stated Tuesday.

The Egyptian “Abu Ashraf” sailed from the Mediterranean city of Port Said to Tunisian territorial waters, the statement added, noting that the fishermen were arrested over illegal fishery.

The Egyptian nationals have been interrogated at Zarzis port, the statement continued.

In September, 11 Egyptian fishermen were arrested over trespassing into Tunisian waters; 12 Egyptian fishermen were arrested by the Tunisian coastguard in April.

Several Egyptian fishermen have been arrested lately fishing in territorial waters of neighboring countries, including Sudan, Libya, Tunisia and Turkey.

Egypt’s Foreign Ministry has constantly called on fishermen to respect the sovereignty of other countries and not to fish in their waters without prior permits.
