CAIRO: Transporting cattle from the Sinai Peninsula to other governorates has been banned as a precautionary measure against the spread of potential epidemic diseases at the borders, Youm7 reported Thursday.

Meanwhile, the process to immunize live animals against foot and mouth disease, the Rift Valley, sheep pox and ovine rinderpest is ongoing, head of the Agriculture Ministry’s Veterinary Department Ibrahim Mahrous told Youm7.

The ministry also undertakes awareness campaigns to encourage citizens to report any epidemic disease in their livestock, Mahrous said.

Egypt has also banned importing pet birds in fear of the bird flu virus, and banned importing any birds from France in November after the latter detected the H5N1 virus in the southwestern region.
