CAIRO: Some 3,343 Facebook pages that allegedly incite violence were closed, while 254 people have been arrested for inciting violence in the recent period, according to a Sunday statement by the Interior Ministry.

The Ministry of Interior previously announced it monitors social networks to track extremists who incite violence, but activists and social media users criticized the monitoring for breaching users’ privacy.

Several Facebook pages, including Giza Popular Resistance and other pages, have been created in the past two years, posting dozens of videos of pro-Muslim Brotherhood protests and arson attacks.

Such attacks, which were rampant in 2013 and 2014, have largely subsided in 2015.
