CAIRO: The Transport Ministry announced Tuesday it will sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the Military Production Ministry to upgrade railway crossings nationwide, Youm7 reported.
The MoU also includes manufacturing train engines and cars and upgrading control and signaling systems. and operation systems, said the statement.
The cost has not been disclosed yet but it is expected to be revealed during a press conference at the Transport Ministry headquarters Tuesday afternoon.
According to a report issued in October by the National Authority for Egyptian Railways, 1.4 million passengers use trains every day.
Egypt’s railway, which is one of the oldest in the world, has been struggling with an outdated system for years.
A total of 781 people died in train accidents in 2014, according to a report issued by the Central Agency For Public Mobilization & Statistics (CAPMAS.)
