CAIRO: President Abdel Fatah al Sisi will unveil Thursday the names of the public figures appointed to the People’s Assembly, a high-profile presidential source told Youm7.
According to Article 102 of the Egyptian constitution passed in January 2014, the President is authorized to appoint a number of public figures, who are not members of any political faction, as parliament members. However, number of the appointees shall not exceed 5 percent of the total number of representatives.
A total of 568 parliament members were elected in the parliamentary ballot carried out in two phases in October and November.
The constitution also stipulates that at least 50 percent of the appointees are women.
Women secured 73 seats in the recent parliamentary elections, with 56 candidates garnering seats through the quota system and 17 winning individual seats. The number is expected to rise to 87 at least after the presidential appointment of other women.
