CAIRO: The Egyptian Third Field Army found arms storehouse belongs to a “terrorist cell” in restive North Sinai, military spokesperson Mohamed Samir announced in a statement Saturday.
“A total of 2465 high inch calibers, 1.5 tons of explosives, 92 1.5 mm calibers and two thousand liters of gasoline were among the armaments seized,” Samir said, adding that the seized items were delivered to “the stakeholders,” which will proceed with the legal procedures.
Egypt has witnessed a significant rise in militancy since the military-backed ouster of Islamist President Mohamed Morsi in July 2013 following mass protests against his rule. According to the Interior Ministry, militant attacks have killed more than 500 security personnel since then.
In October 2015, the Egyptian army launched “the Right of Martyr” large scale military operation against militant groups in the Sinai Peninsula. The operation lasted for over two weeks and the army announced that it will begin the second phase.
