CAIRO: A report filed by a Maspero anchor against European Union Ambassador to Egypt James Moran has been referred to the State Security Prosecution, Youm7 reported Tuesday.
Nile TV presenter Mona Sweilam filed the report after being banned from covering EU events following a July panel discussion organized by the delegation. She accuses Moran and head of the delegation’s Political and Information section Gabril Munuera Vinals of “spreading false news to defame Egypt’s reputation abroad.”
During the panel discussion, Sweilam objected that panelist Shahira Amin, a journalist and an activist, was presented as an independent journalist. Amin had expressed her disappointment at media freedoms in Egypt.
The discussion tackled regional issues, terrorism and the media.
The EU is the largest economic partner of Egypt with 1.1 billion euro in grants to Cairo. A total of 33.5% of Egypt’s exports by the end of the third quarter of fiscal year 2014/2015 was purchased by the EU, according to the Central Bank of Egypt.
The EU is also the largest exporter of goods to Egypt. Of Egypt’s total imports, 28.7% were imported from EU countries.
