CAIRO: Mexican authorities have determined that the Egyptian travel agency that arranged an outing to the western desert in Egypt is responsible for the death of eight Mexican tourists who were mistaken for militants and fatally shot from the air by Egyptian military forces, AFP reported Thursday.

Windows of Egypt, the travel agency, had its license withdrawn after the incident for “not producing prerequisite licenses for the safari trip and not informing the authorities of the itinerary,” Youm7 quoted Tourism Minister Hesham Zazou Thursday.

Six Mexicans who survived the incident told Mexico’s ambassador to Egypt they had been bombed by helicopters and an aircraft while they stopped for a break in the desert, according to Reuters.

Following the incident in September, the Mexican foreign Minister  Claudia Massieu visited Cairo and met with President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi.
