CAIRO: A total of 34 feddans have been encroached upon in 24 days; 21 feddans have been cleared from infringements, according to a Wednesday report by the Agriculture Ministry.
A total of 829 of incidents of encroachment have occurred from Dec. 24 to Jan. 12; 308 of which have been removed.
Qalyubia in the Delta ranked first in violation removals, followed by Dakahlia, also in the Delta, then Qena and Asyut in Upper Egypt.
Encroachments on farmland include bulldozing, construction, and silos, threatening the shrinking arable land in the country. The infringements have increased after the January upheaval in 2011.
The government is fighting an epidemic of encroachments upon arable lands; President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi launched in December the first phase of a national mega project to expand the country’s farmland by 1.5 million feddans.
