Militant killed by Egyptian security forces in Sinai

CAIRO: A total of 13 militants were killed south of Sheikh Zuwayed while they were attempting to launch an attack Thursday, informed sources told Youm7.

Military jets are striking areas suspected of hosting terrorist activities south and west of Sheikh Zuwayed city in North Sinai, eyewitnesses told Youm7.

Meanwhile, security forces have launched intensive operations since the dawn against “terrorists” in the restive area, and foiled attempted “terrorist attacks” in Sheikh Zuwayed,” a security source told Youm7.

Arish-Sheikh Zuwayed highway and roads leading to the said areas have been closed off, Youm7 reported.

Local Bedouins said a gun battle between the forces and militants occurred in southern Sheikh Zuwayed, and that operations are still ongoing.

President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi extended Wednesday the current state of emergency in parts of North Sinai for an additional three months staring from Jan. 27, Al Akhbar newspaper reported.

On Jan. 2, the second major phase of the Right of the Martyr operation was launched, with military spokesperson Mohamed Samir reporting on the killing and detentions of dozens of alleged militants.
