4 soldiers, 30 militants killed in North Sinai battles

CAIRO: Four soldiers were killed and 8 were injured in gun battles with North Sinai militants; the military killed 30 alleged terrorists and severely injured 10 others, according to a Thursday military statement.

Military forces foiled an attempt to target a checkpoint south of Sheikh Zuwayed city, resulting in the gun battles and raids, according to military spokesperson Mohamed Samir.

Eight farms used as hiding spots for militants, three SUVs, a motorcycle and a car were destroyed in the confrontations. Meanwhile, three military vehicles were destroyed by explosive devices, Samir added.

President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi extended Wednesday the October 2014 state of emergency in parts of North Sinai for an additional three months staring from Jan. 27, Al Akhbar newspaper reported.

On Jan. 2, the second major phase of the Right of the Martyr operation was launched, with military spokesperson Mohamed Samir reporting on the killing and detentions of dozens of alleged militants.
