CAIRO: Egypt’s Grand Mufti Shawqi Allam slammed Wednesday the attack that killed at least 19 people in Bacha Khan University of Pakistan.
Militants stormed the university in northwestern Pakistan, shooting at students, guards, policemen and teaching staff. Four of the gunmen have been killed, Reuters reported.
“Extremists hate science and scientists; hence they try with all their might to repel people away from knowledge that widens their perceptions and saves them from extremism so ignorance prevails and [extremists] become able to control minds,” the Mufti stated.
The Mufti paid his condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery for those injured.
On Tuesday, the Grand Mufti met with United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in Geneva ahead of the World Economic Forum to discuss the efforts of the Egyptian Dar al-Iftaa to debunk extremist ideologies.
