CAIRO: Sallum border guards have arrested a total of 28 people in a military zone, trying to illegally travel to Libya via desert routes, Youm7 reported Wednesday.
Those arrested hail from four governorates: Kafr el-Sheikh, Minya, Assiut and Beheira.
Hisham Lotfy, Marsa Matrouh security director, told Youm7 that the detainees will be referred to specialized prosecution.
Hundreds of migrants, both Egyptians and foreigners, have been regularly arrested at the Sallum border in attempts to travel to the oil-rich country, despite government’s warnings of deteriorated security situation there.
On the other hand, the crossing has received thousands of Egyptians returning from Libya. Around 124,000 nationals have arrived since the beheading of 20 Egyptian Copts by the Islamic State (IS) group in Libya in February 2015.
