CAIRO: A technician and an operator of a drinking water station in Sharqia, the Delta, have been ordered jailed for four days pending investigations over negligence that led to the poisoning of some 600 locals, Youm7 reported Wednesday.
The unit that purifies water and removes bacteria was not functioning properly in April 2015, but was left to pump water, according to a committee from the Faculty of Engineering, Zagazig University that inspected the station.
Hundreds of locals in al-Ibrahimiya town in Sharqia suffered diarrhea and vomiting at the same time due to the contaminated water.
Ibrahimiya residents do not access municipal water, instead purchasing jerry cans. The Water Company said in April that samples of the purchased water “did not meet technical specifications.”
