CAIRO: Egypt renewed its call on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to protect Palestinian rights and Israel to end the occupation of Palestinian lands, Egyptian permanent representative to the United Nations Amr Abu el-Atta stated Tuesday.

Atta asked how the Palestinian issue remains on the council’s agenda for more 70 years since without reaching a solution; he added that the two-state solution is a “must” to bring about the stability and security.

“A lasting agreement will require difficult compromises by both the Israeli and Palestinian leaders,” UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon said Tuesday, adding “More unilateral acts by each side, intentionally designed to pre-empt negotiations and provoke the other side? The parties must act – and act now – to prevent the two-state solution from slipping away forever.”
