Egypt’s renowned actress Fayrouz dies at 73

CAIRO: Egypt’s renowned actress Fayrouz has passed away Saturday, two days after she was admitted to the intensive care unit at a Cairo hospital over health complications, Youm7 reported.

Born in Cairo in 1943, Perouz Artin Kalfayan, better known by her professional name Fayrouz, was also nicknamed for the “legendary child” during the Egyptian cinema golden era in 1950s and 1960s.

“Yasmine” was her first movie in 1950 but her popularity did not rise before her starring role at the 1955 movie Dahab in which she sang the title song “Miaana Rial.” However she stopped appearing in movies when she was 15 years old.

She starred in more than 10 films as actress, singer, dancer and entertainer, and is the widow of Egyptian actor Badr el Din Gamgoum.
