CAIRO: The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Ahmed al-Tayyeb will head to Indonesia in the next two weeks for his first visit to Asia since he assumed his position in 2010, Youm7 reported.
In his Asian tour, Imam al-Tayyeb will also visit Malaysia, France and then some African nations, informed sources told Youm7.
On Jan. 24, Imam al-Tayyeb met with Indonesian Ambassador to Cairo Nour Veizi, who invited him to his country.
The Imam previously visited Italy, the U.K., Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Jordan and Bahrain, according to Youm7.
Al-Azhar has embarked on several activities to counter extremist ideology and has reached out to Muslims who live in the west to “correct the image” of Islam. Last year, President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi called on Al-Azhar to launch a “religious revolution” to understand the religion.
