CAIRO: Egypt’s Grand Mufti Shawqi Allam denounced the “heinous terrorist crime” that occurred Sunday in Damascus, where suicide bombings at a holy Shiite shrine killed more than 60 people.

“Bloodshed and terrorizing innocent people has become second nature to extremists who have lost the minimum human feelings and ignored the purpose of the Islamic law, which emphasized preserving souls by making bloodshed one of the greatest sins, even more sacred than the Kaaba,” the Grand Mufti stated Monday, referring to Muslims’ holiest site, located in Mecca.

The Islamic State group (IS) claimed the Damascus attack at al-Sayeda Zeinab shrine as part of a spate of anti-Shiite attacks in the Muslim world.

Al-Azhar also condemned a Friday suicide attack on a Shiite mosque in Saudi Arabia, which killed at least four people.
