CAIRO: The ceiling of the third floor of a historic synagogue in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria collapsed Sunday; the Antiquities Ministry has been informed of the incident, Youm7 reported.

The collapsed part is four meter-squared, which covered the women’s area in the synagogue, an official source at the Islamic, Christian and Jewish Administration of the ministry’s branch in Alexandria told Youm7.

The synagogue was built more than 150 years ago in Alexandria downtown in el-Nabi Danial Street; no restoration works have been launched to preserve the synagogue recently due to “lack of funds,” according to Youm7.

Head of the Jewish Community in Egypt Magda Haroun has repeatedly expressed concerns over the maintenance of Jewish heritage in the country.
