CAIRO: The Lawyers Syndicate will hold an emergency meeting Sunday after a lawyer was arrested by a policeman from a courthouse in Egypt’s Delta governorate of Sharqia, syndicate board member Khaled Abu Kreisha told Youm7.

Footage from a security camera installed in a shop facing courthouse in Sharqia’s town of Faqous has confirmed the arrest of lawyer Ibrahim Abdel Moneim Abu Gamous Friday by a policeman in plain clothes, said Abu Kreisha.

The meeting comes after head of Lawyers Syndicate Sameh Ashour’s inquiry about the reason behind the arrest was ignored by the Interior Ministry.

“We are following on the case with the interior ministry regarding the reason beyond the arrest and the charges,” Ashour was quoted by Youm7.

Following the incident, Ashour called on lawyers in Sharqia to initiate an open strike Sunday until the reasons behind the arrest are revealed. On Saturday, scores of lawyers organized a sit-in outside the Faqous police station demanding the release of Gamous.
