CAIRO: The price of a single fare on the Cairo Metro could be increased by 50 piasters to 1.5 EGP, Egypt’s Prime Minister Sherif Ismail told Editors-in Chief of the national and independent newspapers Tuesday.
“If we considered to raise the price of Metro ticket, the increase will be by 50 piasters,” Ismail said.
The Ministry of Transport stated several times that the Metro ticket price would not rise, most recently was Minister Saad El-Geyoushi on Dec. 10, 2015.
The Cairo Metro system consists of three lines connecting an 80 kilometer radius. The ticket price is unified on all three lines at 1 EGP; El Geyoushi has stated previously that this ticket price increases deficit of the metro system.
“The decision of increasing price of metro ticket is inevitable,” Cairo Metro representative in the Ministry of Transportation Khaled Sabra told Youm7 on Feb. 22.
