CAIRO: Egypt was selected to host the 2017 International Basketball Federation (FIBA) U-19 Championship, FIBA announced in a statement Saturday.

“The Egyptian capital of Cairo will be the backdrop of next year’s FIBA U19 World Championship, the first-ever FIBA world youth event staged in Africa,” the statement read.

“The FIBA has just notified me about the outcome of its meeting saying that the majority of votes went for Egypt against competing rivals (Israel, Italy, and Latvia),” chairman of the Egyptian Basketball Federation (EBF) Magdy Abu Ferekha told Youm7 Saturday. The competing countries submitted their bids late February to host the championship.

Italy was chosen to host the 2017 FIBA U19 Women’s World Championship in cities of Udine and Cividale Del Friuli, the FIBA announced.

As for the 2016 U17 World Championships for men and women, the FIBA selected Spain’s Zaragoza to host these events that will be jointly played for the first time, the statement added.

Greece hosted the 2015 U-19 world tournament in which the U.S. was crowned for the second time after it triumphed in 2013, according to FEBA official website. The first tournament was held in 1979 in Brazil.
