CAIRO: The Rafah border crossing was opened exceptionally Sunday to allow the dead body of a Palestinian woman into Gaza, an official source at the crossing told Youm7.

Aeisha al-Atrash, 73, died in the Palestine Hospital in Cairo during her treatment, the source said.

The Egyptian authorities turned over the body to the Palestinian side in the blockaded enclave.

The crossing, largely closed through the year, was last open in February for three days. On Feb. 13 alone, some 595 traveled to Gaza and around 726 arrived in the Egyptian side, including patients and students.

About 45 trucks carrying around 4,145 tons of cement have also crossed into the strip. Egypt; however, has repeatedly stated that the crossing is for people only and that Israel should assume its responsibility as an occupation power to allow goods and people into and out the coastal strip.

The buildings in the enclave were largely destroyed during the Israeli aggressive in summer 2014.
