CAIRO: Authorities at the Cairo International Airport thwarted multiple attempts to smuggle sums of foreign currency out of Egypt within the past 24 hours, Youm7 reported Monday.
Airport security suspected an Egyptian passenger heading to a Gulf state, and found $65,000 in his bags.
Meanwhile, the customs department has also stopped several passengers; two Egyptians, one was hiding $50,000 and the other for $55,000, and a Syrian passenger over possessing 30,000 Arab Emirates Dirham (AED.)
All the seized money was confiscated and police reports were filed against the smugglers, who were referred to specialized prosecution.
Luggage and personal inspection by airports customs are routine measures, under which the department has announced foiling hundreds of attempts to smuggle drugs, unlicensed artifacts, large amounts of money and alleged spying cameras.
