CAIRO: The Alexandria Criminal Court commuted Monday a 15-year term to three years in jail for a former police officer in the State Security Service charged of torturing a detainee to death, Youm7 reported.
The court delivered its ruling in the case of Osama el-Konayessy after hearing witnesses and three acquitted defendants that he had tortured detainee Sayed Belal to death to extract a confession of involving in bombings targeted the Coptic Orthodox church of Saint Mark and Pope Peter in the Sidi Bishr at 2011 Christmas Eve. More than 20 people were killed and dozens were injured in the bombings.
In April 2013, Konayessy was sentenced to 15 years in jail after first being sentenced to life in absentia.
Three other police officers were accused of the same charges, but were acquitted later in different trials.
